Ya! Us Big Girls Get Objectified Too!

Posted by Gina C. on January 25th, 2009

So there’s this calendar that features curvy and super curvy women. I’m debating on whether to share the link or not because while I do appreciate the sentiment, I still can’t get past the objectification.

Oh I know, it’s not a big deal right. It’s just women in bathing suits and I should be happy because they are curvy and it’s diverse. Not the same old same old. Thin women get objectified, so I should be happy that it’s spreading to every woman.

Sorry, I just can’t conform. I would just like to see women valued for their minds and not their bodies- curvy or not. Drooling over women in bathing suits just doesn’t sit well with me.

Maybe I’ll change my mind, but I won’t be sharing that link today.

I’m such a stick in the mud. I know.

I think it’s unfair to treat it like it’s something only done to women. I know plenty of women who can’t wait for the new fireman’s calendar every year so they can drool over all the half naked guys.

Here’s the thing…and I don’t know how to explain this without going into a long history lesson but I’ll try.

This site is about women and I am talking about women. I’m sure
women drool over men, but it’s different in most cases. (Not fair right? Well neither is life) The reason is mainly
because men aren’t the “oppressed” gender. I’m sure for every sexy fireman image there are 20 images of intelligent men, powerful
men, men CEO’s, men leaders, men presidents. Whereas I’d say
for every 1 intelligent, strong, woman; there are 20 images of the sex kitten, the bimbo, the “weaker vessel”

So with all due respect, please spare me. This is a conversation
about women, to women, for women. If you want to talk about men then let’s start a different topic but don’t try to act like it’s comparing apples to apples because it isn’t.
