Plus Size Magazine: What Do You Think?

Posted by Gina C. on February 22nd, 2009

Reader Request:

Hi, I really want to start a magazine for plus size women who want to be mega fashionable and sexy (not slutty sexy though).

I’ve always wanted to Edit etc and work as an Editorial production Assistant (but in a very differnt field). I was wondering if there was a) something out there already like the ASOS Magazine for example but for Plus sized women (not sure if there is ASOS in the states) but for example (again) Baby Phat do a hot picks newsletter - but what if someone did it across all stores - for plus size women???

What do people think? I was wondering if you could perhaps write up a poste like this and people could respond to let me know if something like this would be useful/good for them??

Response:

When I think of plus size magazines I often think of the many websites out there like Venus Diva Magazine, Plus Model Magazine, Figure Magazine, BBW Magazine and many others who have come and gone.

I cannot think of a mainstream plus size magazine but if someone had the knowledge, connections, and funds to try and make one I wouldn’t discourage it. I’d just say research like crazy before you try to do anything. I’d support it on principle, just because I’m tired of the same old, same old; but I’m not really sure if I would personally go out and buy something like that. My advice would be to start a website first.

What does everyone else think?

I WOULD DEFINITELY BE INTERESTED !!! My website http://www.plussizemommy.blogspot.com would be so honored to feature such a magazine, and personally, I would LOVE to model for one. Please Please let me know if you would like me to do anything to help. Contact me at anytime :)

I just wanted to let you know I stumbled this :)

I agree, I think the best first step isto make a website.

Its time for a stylish hip magazine that featured plus size women! I think its great Good Luck with everything. I’d be happy to advertised it on my blog!

I would love it! I think it would be a great outreach to those of us that sometimes feel like there is just nothing out there that talks about being plus size and beautiful. Society focuses on being skinny and having no fat, no curves and that just is not right. I would be all of helping out in anyway possible! Please let me know what I can do! :)

Wow -first of all Thanks Gina for posting it ..

Second of all - thanks to you guys for your support.

I have the know how at present but perhaps not the links.

I would start using a blog facility - so that its nice and free - but with the ability to post pictures of “cool stuff”.

Thanks again for the spur and support because I was fearful it would fall flat and get no responses!!

It would be stylish and hip - and as opinionated as alot of the magazines out there for the skinny ladies…It’ll be alot of fun.

Oh - one thing - what does everyone think of the ones above…that Gina Mentions?

I might go a little wider with some market research but its great to get some preliminary feedback!

There is a need for this and you can go to http://www.mymag.com to find out how to start a magazine but it is expensive!

I just discovered Figure and I Love it!

If you need any assistance relating to this, I would be happy to assist in any way that I can.

As someone who’s enormously fond of plump women, I’m always keen to see magazines promoting acceptance of curves and style. I really dislike the skinny, bony look (think Keira Knightley and you’ll have my archetype for badly-shaped women).

Almost a decade ago, my agent turned me on to a book I want to recommend to everyone: “Zaftig: The Case for Curves.” Wonderful for anyone who’s a fan of Pre-Raphaelite women.

[...] this would be an awesome idea, or know of/have any ways you can help, please go to this website : http://www.acurvydiva.com/2009/02/22/plus-size-magazine-what-do-you-think/and tell her what you think by leaving a comment. If you really like the idea, please consider [...]

I’d just like to thank you for posting the idea elsewhere…

I’m at the moment working as an Editorial Assistant and getting training to become a Production Editor. When i get that role (and all the training that comes with it) I’ll have more time to write and get this idea off the ground. Developing some style and opinion…

I’ll be sure to experiment - but the thing is I have found a few state side but nothing UK side. I’d like it to be an across the water brand (but realise i must start small)- but thats known for being just as high profile as some of the hit magazines around.

At the moment I’m trying my best to get involved with some designers and their shows here in london so that i see whats up and coming.

Again - thanks for your support and keep it coming because I wont stay this quiet for long!

Ok, so I finally got this up …i’ll be adding to it and its all UK side news…but I figured i’d update you on my progress.

I’m also going to be working with a plus size radio station… who talk about those fat issues regularly in Amsterdam. I’m hoping to provide them with a link so that people can listen live from my site…. once I buy the domain.

And cant wait to show case plus size fashion designers!

Ok…enjoy http://nomilantaxi.blogspot.com/

Feedback very very welcome :-)
