Camille Clifford: Gibson Girl

Posted by Gina C. on March 17th, 2009

Since March is Women’s History Month, I thought I’d take you back in history to a time where curves were seen as sexy, not a curse.

First a little definition primer.

Camille CliffordGibson Girl- From the late 19th century until the early 20th century, the “Gibson Girl” was the personification of feminine images drawn by Charles Gibson. The Gibson girl was tall, trim, yet she had curves for days in her hips, backside, and breasts.

The Gibson Girl was beauty…until WWI when a different body type started to be favored.

Camille Clifford was the most famous model for Charles Gibson’s illustrations. She was known for wearing long gowns that showed off her 18 inch waist. (Of course, she wore a very tight corset to achieve that wasp waistlook).

Here’s a gallery of more photos of Camille Clifford. We definitely won’t be seeing models who look like this (on a regular basis) anytime soon, but it’s nice to take a peak back in history.
