How to Stay Motivated

Posted by Gina C. on May 5th, 2009

Reader Question: I read that you lost 17lbs and I would like to know how you did it. I know you exercised but how did you maintain the willpower to do it? I need to lose 50lbs and I don’t see that happening because I am too overwhelmed.

Answer:

You can lose 50lbs! Just don’t expect to do it instantly. Literally give yourself a year to do it. That takes so much pressure off because 4lbs a month is very attainable.

I don’t like exercising, and eating healthy is a chore so I knew I had to find something that would work for me. That’s why I had to pick exercises that were somewhat enjoyable for me.

And as for my diet, it could be better and I probably could have lost 34 lbs by now, but giving up everything I want to eat isn’t going to work for me. I do count my calories and how much I eat, but there is no food that I have completely given up.

Really my motivation comes from within. I really want to fit in my old clothes. That’s as simple as it gets. I am not doing it for anyone else but myself.

I stay motivated by making sure I enjoy the exercises I do and that it’s not a hassle for me to workout. And also my taking my measurements monthly so I can see the progress. I weigh myself weekly but I only jot down my weight twice a month.

Good luck to you. I know you can do it!

Hey

I’m not entirely sure I can do it. Basically I know my money is where it hurts. I’m going to sign up to a gym and go to classes. It’s the only way I know I will do it for sure.
I’ve also made sure that the gym is on my way home. Near home or Work is no good – because I can just avoid it if it’s any more than 2seconds out of my way.
As for the food, I have a problem – a serious sweet tooth and a love for popcorn …I also don’t desire to eat things that a rabbit or horse would probably enjoy.
However I have decided also that a year of dieting and mega exercise is just a little too long – I want to loose weight but I want to some day eat as I please again.

I have 2 significant dates for which it would be nice to feel good. August 31st and October 5th. I want to loose between 42 and 70lbs! My aim is at the moment: 7lbs a month until Christmas then review how I feel about myself.

So rather than an extra LONG moan – what I’d like to ask is – does any one want to buddy up for a food and exercise diary? And just general support for what we’re doing?
